1996 / 2011
It is fifteen years since Lara Croft first appeared in the video game world, Tomb Raider was a 1996, Eidos release for the Sony Playstation and it could possibly have never known just how big a star the relic hunter was going to be and what sort of impact she would have on the world of gaming. However the fame for Lara did not last and with each new game fans were quick to point out the flaws in the system and play and Ms. Croft soon found herself like so many other Video Game mascots somewhere in Idol Limbo – a figure of the past.
So what do you do when you need to step back into the spotlight?
Re-invent yourself and the Tomb Raider has certainly done that. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have done something absolutely astounding, we’re not just talking about the sheer beauty and brilliance of the clip (which don’t worry it’s right below… we won’t feel bad if you stop reading now and watch it by the way!) they have actually managed to get us… former Tomb Raider fans… excited about this forthcoming title!
When you take the trailer apart (once you get over the inital shock of how amazing it looks and sounds!) it depicts a young Lara, en route to an adventure, desperate to cut her teeth and make a name for herself, a fledging treasure seeker her hopes lie on some island in Japan but are soon dashed as her ship the ‘Endurance’ are caught in a storm and the vessel is torn asunder by the crashing waves. Lara barely surviving the chaotic sea, washes up on an island, beaten and broken but alive, it would seem that adventure found Lara.
With well over a year left until we will get a chance to play the game, we’re going to have to satisfy ourselves with rewatching the trailer and hoping for drips and drabs of releases over the coming months… but for now… one more time…
