If you haven’t been paying attention to or you aren’t a PSN user then chances are you won’t have a clue of what we’re talking about here! So here is a super quick background update for those of you with your head in the sand or with something better to do than play video games (like there is anything better?!)

A PSN user by the name of Geohot created a hack for the PS3 effectively jail breaking the console and allowing others to use his methods to do the same. Sony sent their lawyers after the user and issued him with a lawsuit for breaching their terms and conditions. Now various rumours and such spead rapidly over what happened next, some of them referred to a group of George Hotz (Geohot) followers attacking PSN servers, there was talk of nationwide and even international protest/boycotts of Sony stores and products.

On the 21st April Sony took the PS Network servers down both in Europe and US stating that the issue was related to maintenance and many speculated that the company were merely trying to beef up security to prevent further attacks from Anonymous, the hactivist group responsible for campaigns against the Church of Scientology.

The following video was released by Anonymous in an attempt to explain why exactly they have targetted Sony and the PS Network:

Today, Nick Caplin, Head of Communications over at SCEE posted a blog with regards the recent downtime of servers worldwide and what users can expect over the next days while answering some frequently asked questions:

“First off, we want to again thank you for your patience. We know that the PlayStation Network and Qriocity outage has been frustrating for you. We know you are upset, and so we are taking steps to make our services safer and more secure than ever before. We sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern this outage has caused, and rest assured that we’re going to get the services back online as quickly as we can.”

It seems that the battle for users rights is not even far from over!
