Medal of Honor first began way back in 1999 when the first game, by the same name, was released for the PlayStation. The game was published by Electronic Arts but was developed by DreamWorks Interactive and written by Steven Spielberg. Since then the Medal of Honour series has spawned sequels and spin offs but the games have always focused on World War II that is up until now. EA and their writers are giving the series a reboot and we are finally being dropped into the world of modern combat.
Plot
The game will feature a single and multiplayer mode. In single player mode you will have to advance through various campaigns operating as US Army Ranger, Apache gunner and with greater focus being thrown on your role as a ‘Tier One Operator’.
The ‘Tier One Operators’ are working under the National Command Authority in Afghanistan and are the men who are sent in when there are no others capable of completing hazardous missions. As the player you will play your way through war torn scenarios based in an Afghanistan of 2002.
To summarise the plot this is what the developers have had to say:
“Players will step into the boots of these warriors and apply their unique skill sets to a new enemy in the most unforgiving and hostile battlefield conditions of present day Afghanistan.
There is a new enemy. There is a new war. There is a new warrior. He is Tier 1”
Gameplay
When the developers began their work on the new game they aspired to make it as true to actual real life combat as possible and so several US Army consultants were brought on board to help with the process of creating the game. Medal of Honour is a first person shooter and features both single and multiplayer modes, in single player you will have to complete various missions, from raiding terrorists hideouts, undercover missions and rescuing hostages.
Multiplayer mode comes packed with different maps, modes of play from team death match scenarios to combat missions. There are 24 weapons available each with unique customization options allowing you to craft your weapon. Vehicles will also be a big part in the game with players being able to operate, jeeps, helicopters and quads.
Multiplayer mode also allows the players to choose their own side playing as either US Army troops or the… ’Insurgents’, this option has led to some controversy.
The game is designed to immerse the player into a world that is almost as realistic as possible with locations being inspired by actual hot spots in Afghanistan.

Controversy
Now if you are up to speed on the news here at the @rcade you would have seen we recently covered the controversy surrounding Medal of Honor. Originally players were allowed to choose their sides in the multiplayer options, allowing them to play as we’ve said already US Army or Insurgent. Well the title of Insurgent is an edit on the part of the developers who originally titled the opposing force as the Taliban.
When the US Military caught wind of their plans immediate pressure was placed on the company to change this as the military felt that it would only cause problems and was a little insensitive for the families of men and women who died serving their country. EA were on a constant drive to portray the game as accurately as possible and to depict the reality of the war but have since changed their minds and renamed the Taliban to ‘Insurgents’. However the Taliban have not been changed in single player mode as it’s perfectly fine for US soldiers to kill them… the controversy continues…
Special Edition
Irish gamers and the rest of Europe can look forward to a very special edition of the game ‘Tier 1’. This edition of the game will feature all the same treats as the US limited edition including a Battlefield 3 Beta Key, Medal of Honor: Frontline download token, it will also give access to weapons only available through upgrades and a special token to allow players access to ‘Class Operational Tier 1’
We are waiting patiently for the release of Medal of Honor and all early reports are indicating that this is highly controversial game is a must have for any first person shooter fan! We will let you know when we get our hands on a full copy!
