What I Am Looking Forward To
There are a number of titles I am looking forward to. These games include a sequel to a classic side-scroller, a remake of a legendary stealth action title, and I’m excited to have some new platform players join a galactic war.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
Release Date: Aug 28th Platform: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
The original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater first launched on PlayStation 2 in 2004, coming to European markets in 2005. This masterpiece from Hideo Kojima mixed stealth and sneaking gameplay through a lush environment, natural jungle, using camouflage mechanics, smart thinking and clever use of cover. This is mixed with action set pieces across large military strongholds, taking on soviet soldiers, . All this wrapped up with a Cold War era espionage story where you have been betrayed by a former mentor, as you are tasked with taking down said mentor and find a hidden fortune, as you use your wit, guns and gadgets to get the mission completed
Konami and Virtuous Studious have remade this top rated game, with Unreal Engine 5. Remaking all the assets, environments and cutscenes, they are even recording some new, but minor dialogue from the original voice actors. It’s a beautiful recreation of the original, while tweaking some gameplay mechanics and even adds a new online component called Fox Hunt, a hide-and-seek style multiplayer component.
Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater releases on August 28th for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance
Release Date: Aug 29th Platform: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, PC
Growing up in the 90’s, the SEGA Mega Drive was a big part of my gaming. A master of side-scrolling beat ’em ups, platformers and hack-and-slash titles, the Mega Drive had some of my favourite titles like Streets of Rage, Golden Axe and of course – Shinobi. My fondest memories are with The Revenge of Shinobi. Now we are getting the first entry into the series in nearly 15 years.
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is an action platform that sees you take on the role of ninja Joe Musashi, as you take traverse levels, take on dozens of enemies, and battle bosses. This stylish title is developed by Lizardcube, who did an amazing job with Streets of Rage 4. Master your moveset and use devastating Ninpo powers to defeat whoever stands in your way.
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance releases August 29th on almost all major platforms.
Gears of War: Reloaded
Release Date: Aug 26th Platform: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
The first Gears of War is coming out on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation on August 26th. The once Xbox console exclusive, Gears of War: Reloaded is stunning looking remaster, built to run on current gen platforms and includes all the content from previous iterations, is courtesy of The Coalition (supported by Sumo Digital and Disbelief). Better yet, the title will come to PlayStation for the first time.
While I have been an avid PlayStation fan for many years, I do have a soft spot for a number of Xbox titles. I had many a good co-op game night with my brother playing the original Gears of Wars trilogy. It would be on the list of the games I would have on PlayStation. Originally developed by Epic Games and Cliff Bleszinski as lead designer, there was a PS3 build discovered back in 2011 as a Unreal Engine 3 test project, but the series has been an Xbox exclusive since launch.
If you haven’t, I urge you to check out Gears of War: Reloaded on August 26th. Hopefully we will see a remake of the sequels and even an announcement of Gears of War: E-Day on consoles other than Xbox too.
Helldivers 2
Release Date: Aug 26th Platform: Xbox Series X|S
Another platform exclusive is broadening its range and releasing to a once rival console. Developed by Arrowhead Studios and published by PlayStation, Helldivers 2 is a cooperative third-person shooter, where you participate in an intergalactic war against 3 deadly factions to spread managed democracy.
Take on the roll of a Helldiver, an elite solider highly trained in warfare against Terminids (a bug-like creature), Automatons (terminator-like cyborgs), and the Illuminate (a mystical alien species). You have a number of armaments, supplies and artillery to help you bring liberty to stricken planets. Called stratagems, they allow players to call in resupplies, drop gun turrets or even call in devastating airstrikes on the enemy.
Xbox Series X|S players can enlist on August 26th. I for one will be jumping back in to help our new comrades joining the battle.
What title are you looking forward to playing in August or what game in 2025 have you your eye on?
