Recently I got to check out Ubisoft’s new space shooter and Toys-to-life game, Starlink: Battle For Atlas. The demo started when I had the choice to pick a pilot and plane. You can choose from a number of playable characters, each with their own attributes, and combine with your choice of ships that have their own stats and skills. There is a handy controller clip where you can insert a figure of your pilot and you pop your chosen ship onto. Finally, you clip on your choice of weapons onto either wing and you are set.

Gameplay

The world is populated by seven planets which you can explore how you like. Gameplay and traversal of these worlds is similar to that of No Man’s Sky. You can enter and exit the atmosphere of the planets and hover close to the land itself. Starlink’s world is populated by waypoints, NPCs and enemies, which can be tackled in whatever order you like.

Your objectives could be to collect loot, destroy enemy outposts or solve some puzzle based tasks. One such puzzle saw me switch my weapons so they match the projectiles needed to shoot and unlock the door (weapons are colour coded to showcase type). Weapons can also be combined to create more damage to the enemies in the world. This mechanic is similar to the likes of the elemental effects of Borderlands weapons. Your weapons can be changed on the fly by switching them in real time on your controller. They easily snap on and off the plane model very easily.

Combat

Starlink’s combat is easy to handle and is enjoyable to partake in. You can roll or dodge attacks with your boost moves, attack enemies with your connected weapons and build-up your special ability gauge. This special ability is determined from the pilot you pick and can be devastating to the surrounding attackers. Enemies will have attack patterns to learn, while you need to be aware of volumes of enemies, as they can quickly nullify your health bar.

If you want to explore elsewhere, you can easily bring your ship back to orbit. There will be occasions where you will have to take part in space battles. Everything is very fluid and controls were tight. The worlds are bright and colourful, while combat is surprisingly deep and upgradable.

Exclusives

There is also a special bonus for Nintendo fans, as you can play the entire game as Fox McCloud and pilot his Arwing. There will be some exclusive back-up buddies and specific levels exclusive to the Switch version.
