Whachu Doin’ This Week… Aoife?

Hi all! So this is my first time doing one of these, and to be honest, my life is a bit of a mess. Stuck in a bit of a career TRENCH with a recent blow to my creative confidence, I’m currently trying to figure out what I want to do versus what is economically possible. Which doesn’t leave many feasible options, as you might imagine.

Between my episodes of existential crisis and small bouts of creativity, I’m trying to at least find joy in the little things and reap as much inspiration as I can to pursue what may end up being, a pipe dream. So! Without further procrastination – oh look, some menial task I really really need to do! – here’s what I’m doin’ this week.

Exploring The Abstract… And Netflix

Recommended months ago by a close friend, I’ve started watching random episodes of Netflix show Abstract: The Art Of Design. Considering my background in fine art, and my pursuit of a career in stage design, the series is a real inspiration. Seeing just how successful ‘everyone else’ seems to be, these design shows can often be a tad demoralising. But instead of artists and designers showing off their creations and exclaiming “Look how good I am!” this series is more an exploration of how an artist creates. It really is encouraging to see world famous illustrator Christoph Niemann stressing over the small things like we all do. Though I doubt I will ever reach the levels of success of stage designer Es Devlin… oh well!

As well as trying to fuel my creative flame, I’m enjoying the odd “life” documentary such as Minimalism, a great little documentary about the important things in life, and Small is Beautiful; A Tiny House Documentary. And of course, catching up on episodes of Grimm and Orphan Black. A girl has needs!

Nothing Like A Good Book…

Usually for me, reading is a form of escapism. Fly off to worlds unknown and imagine you are solving life’s problems with magic or fight-to-the-near-death combat! Yet right now, I’m reading Kathryn Stockett‘s bestselling The Help, which inspired the 2011 film of the same name, and thoroughly enjoying it! I also thoroughly enjoyed the film so I was really looking forward to reading the book… the characters are diverse yet easy to read, with such important and pivotal subjects in the world’s civil rights history. In a time where we are still fighting so many social battles, this book is a look at the small victories that contribute to winning the war.

For anyone who has yet to experience either, I would recommend watching the film first (personally). There are quite a few changes from the book and I feel you can fully enjoy the book while still appreciating the film adaptation, but it may not work the other way round. Regardless, both are recommended!

Music To My Ear Holes!

One word when it comes to my recent listening-while-working habits; Disney. Yes I am a grown adult with bills to pay but hell, there is no situation that can’t be helped by a bitta sing-a-long Disney! Everything from instrumental covers to the cheesiest of musical numbers (minus any Disney Channel codswallop) I will silently sing all the words and sway to the fantastic scores of my childhood and beyond. Whistle while you work? Nah, just listen. To Moana, all day erry day.

Let us know what you’re up to this week and how you cope with the ups and downs of creative life, or otherwise. I understand that what I’m going through this week is just a bump, a hiccup or even perhaps an Everest, but I know I can get through it. Probably. However, I think we all need a reminder from time to time that it’s ok and yes, you can do this. So I hope this helps get you through your week, life or just that moment that is your Everest to climb over.
