‘Atomic Dog’ – George Clinton – Track Of The Day

I’m a big James Brown fan but I also love hip hop and with one little drum break (@5:20), studio musician Clyde Stubblefield became responsible for almost half my entire music collection. If I could select a song responsible for the other half its ‘Atomic Dog’ by George Clinton. Already a living legend thanks to Funkadelic and Parliament, the P-Funk maestro made his solo debut in 1982 with the album Computer Games and ‘Atomic Dog’ was the most famous song on the album, charting number one on the Billboard R&B charts.

‘Atomic Dog’s electronic hand clap, moog bass and synth stings became a staple for West Coast hip-hop in the 90’s as much as ‘Funky Drummer’ was in the 80’s on the East. Every part of this song, from the break beat, the chorus and even Clinton’s ad-libbed vocals have been sampled repeatedly by a multitude of artists. ‘Atomic Dog’ has leant its unique sound to Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur and Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. Even Prince and Red Hot Chili Peppers utilized that perfect P-Funk. And most famously of course was heavily reimagined for the debut single of another music icon, Snoop Doggy Dogg. Everybody sing – “Atomic Doowwooowowowoog!”
