Telltale’s Batman Ep. 3 “New World Order” Review

Episode 3 came out a couple of weeks ago. This review comes a bit late but that’s because things are a bit hectic for me. Granted, things are not as hectic for me as they are for Bruce Wayne in this game, so if he can manage then I should manage too.

Although it doesn’t seem he’s doing so well by the end of this episode though. But I’m getting ahead of myself…

“I was helpless, Bruce, helpless. I couldn’t do anything”

By the end of episode 2 I was confused. Especially after seeing the choice percentage that you always see at the end of an episode. I saved Harvey and left Catwoman to fend for herself, but there’s a logic behind that for me. In all the iterations of Batman, he always regrets not being able to save Harvey from becoming Two-Face, and this game gave me that choice.

Sure, Catwoman was in a tight spot as well but hey, she’s Catwoman and she can fend for herself. So when I saw all the posters for episode 3 with Harvey as Two-Face I was confused. I thought that no matter what I did he’d have half his face burnt but when I started the game he only had bruises, although the damage is already done anyway. The drug they gave him brought back some buried issues and Harvey is changing, for the worst.

It’s interesting seeing him develop typical Two-Face mannerisms without looking the part, it makes things even more chilling. Especially the change of voice. I wonder if by saving him that means I won’t see him as Two-Face, but as a friend pointed out “Telltale doesn’t give you a choice, only the illusion that you have one” so I think it might happen eventually.

“I need to go to Wayne Tower and look into this.”

For this episode Telltale continues to unravel Bruce Wayne as a person. Everything that mattered to him is slowly crashing down and he’s powerless to stop that. This remains to be the most interesting aspect of this game. In fact, we possibly spend more time as Bruce Wayne in this episode than as Batman, and that’s a good thing.

While Bruce Wayne has a suave and collected persona most of the times, I couldn’t help it and my Bruce loses his sh*t. There’s one moment when Oswald drops something “accidentally” to spite Bruce, and the game gives you an option to punch him or not. In normal circumstances I’m sure Bruce Wayne wouldn’t punch someone else, but I was feeling angry so I hit punched him once (the game gives you an option to punch him twice). Sure, it all led to Bruce being escorted out by security but it was worth it.

The parts with Batman are still cool, but the crime scene investigation mechanic feels a bit old by now. And the QTEs continue to be extremely merciful, although this gives us a really funny scene if we fail to catch a batarang thrown at us. But the fight involving the leader of the Children of Arkham is thrilling.

Although I prefer the scene between Bruce and Selina halfway through the episode. I was hoping for a similar scene and I’m glad it happened.

“Retribution, Bruce.”

With two episodes left at this point, it feels like most of the pieces are in play.  I’m not sure how I feel about the reveal of who the mastermind of this plot is. Sure, it’s an interesting reveal but I want to know the logic behind it. Especially because of the character in question.

It was effective, in that it just had me almost screaming at my laptop. It didn’t help that in true Telltale fashion this episode finished at the worst possible moment. And the teaser for the next episode doesn’t paint a pretty picture at all. All in all I enjoyed this episode mostly because of how the story advanced.

I still don’t like that the QTE seem to be just a formality where it doesn’t matter if you don’t press certain keys. The way I see it, if a game has QTEs then there should be negative consequences. I remember how in The Wolf Among Us (a game that inexplicably doesn’t have a second season yet) you’d get punched or worse if you failed.

All in all, it looks like next episode is going to be more interesting. Possibly even more Batman-light than this one, so I guess we’ll see how that goes later on this month.
