Since Kevin Faige, president of Marvel Studios, revealed his commitment to creating a Black Widow movie, fans have heard little or no news on its development. Directors such as Joe and Anthony Russo (responsible for Captain America:Civil War) have revealed their interest in directing. While fellow Avengers actors have also question the lack of a solo Black Widow film.
However, Black Widow herself; Scarlet Johansson has now shared her ideas for the potential solo film while speaking to Variety.
“I would like for it to happen under the right circumstances,” she revealed. “I think there’s a lot of opportunity to mine that story line. She’s got a really rich origins story. There’s a lot of places you can go — you can bring it back to Russia. You could explore the Widow program. There’s all kinds of stuff that you could do with it. You could really uncover the identity of who this person is, where she comes from and where she’s part of.”
As to whether or not the solo film would feature the Black Widow’s backstory, Johansson stated: “It’s a possibility. There’s plenty of back story. Or not. It could be something else. Where do the Avengers go? They are underground. What happens then? What happens after it all falls apart? There are so many ways you can go. […] It would have been totally different than any of the other standalone films.”
I think many Marvel fans would be delighted to see Black Widow in her own standalone film. Although with a franchise saturated with origin stories, such a film would need to be treated with caution. However, Johansson has said that Black Widow is her favourite character to play. So rest assured, the future of the film is in capable hands!
Johansson’s Black Widow can be seen again in Avengers: Infinity War, scheduled to release in May, 2018.
