The trailer for season 3 of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror is finally here! The trailer shows the plots for six new stories. In surprising turn of events, the first episode takes place in California. The episode, named ‘San Junipero’ reacts to Black Mirror’s growing American audience (the series recently moved to Netflix). Consequently, Brooker remarks of the new fanbase that he thinks “it would be funny to f**k with those people.” Brooker describes this episode as “an ‘80s coming-of-age drama with a Black Mirror undertow.” The episode is surprising not only for its upbeat American tone, but also for the 1980’s setting. In a show that primarily moves forward in time, a move backwards could be a big deal.
The second episode ‘Shut Up and Dance,’ is the “most grounded” episode to date, due to its contemporary setting. ‘Nosedive’ and ‘Men Against Fire’ will cover social interactions and technological warfare. In addition, ‘Hated in the Nation’ will be Black Mirror’s first 90 minute episode, dealing with “online rage.” The final episode, ‘Playset,’ will tackle online gaming. The episode features its protagonist testing a new game system with sinister effects, implied by mentions of surgery in the trailer.
The new series will be released on the 21st October.
