Verdun Review

After the countless modern warfare shooters of the last decade or so, I for one are glad to see the first person shooter genre turn back towards the World Wars. While we have had numerous games set during World War II over the years, there has been a gap in the market for a truly authentic FPS set during the First World War.

Enter Verdun, a squad-based multiplayer shooter from M2H and Blackmill Games. Verdun has built quite a reputation for itself since it launched on Steam and has a very positive rating as I am writing this review. From the Steam reviews and its trailer depiction of the trench warfare offered within, I was excited to play Verdun on PS4.

I am going to come right out and say it. Verdun on PS4 is bad. Not bad in an ‘I let my hype based expectations run away with themselves’ kind of way either. Verdun on PS4 is top to bottom one of the least enjoyable gaming experiences I have had in a long time.

First off, it is clear from the very start that the controls have been poorly optimised for a game controller. Regardless of how much I changed the aim sensitivity, I felt like I was trying to aim a sophisticated high-powered telescope at a distant celestial body rather than aiming down the sights of a rifle. The movement is also really clunky which is not what you want in a trench warfare shooter, where precision movement in a tight space is vital.

Second, Verdun on PS4 is ugly. Forgive me for coming to expect a certain level of graphical fidelity in 2016, even from Indie titles, but I do. The character models, the trenches themselves, the surrounding landscapes are a drab mixture of browns, greys and dark greens. Medal Of Honor: Frontline on the PS2 would be prettier to look at if released in 2016 than Verdun is on PS4.

Not only are the graphics ugly but there are plenty of glitches. Maps only partially loading and the truly terrifying sight of my squad mates eyeballs floating where their head should be. Couple this with frequent frame rate drops and we are entering utter shambles territory. I thought the frame rate drop might have had something to do with my internet connection so I decided to play the game offline to test. It made little difference.

Honestly it baffles me how M2H and Blackmill Games could release such a broken mess. If you absolutely insist on trying Verdun for yourselves please do yourselves a favour and give the game a wide birth on PS4 and pick up a copy on Steam.

3 out of 10.
