Various media have attempted to tackle the character from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but it doesn’t always work out too favourably. The most well known adaption is likely the hit and miss 2004 film starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale. I personally enjoyed the trashy fantasy film, but it received a poor critical response.
This latest take made by the SyFy channel follows a newly resurrected Vanessa, descendant of the original vampire hunter, as she tries to stop vampire world domination.
The SyFy channel has been making Sci-Fi and fantasy shows for years, with mixed results (we’re big Z-Nation fans!). Plus with a myriad of remakes, including quite a few film-to-TV versions, it’s hard to know how to feel about this one.
That said, as we reported last year, this is a female led adaptation that hopes to “move the traditional vampire tropes into bold and unexpected new territories”, so there is hope yet that this is something fresh. Check out the trailer below.
Vampire-related media has faded into the background a bit of late, except of course the fantastic Penny Dreadful. This was probably due to over-saturation of the market and falling standards of fantasy writing, but let’s hope this show turns that standard on its head.
