Since 2014, fans of Markus ‘Notch’ Perrson‘s sandbox game Minecraft have eagerly awaited news on the upcoming film adaptation. Despite the inspired choice of Rob McElhenney (writer, creator and star of hit comedy It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) as director, little else has been revealed. However, Warner Bros and Wujang COO, Vu Bui recently released a tweet confirming the release date to be May 24, 2019.
The statement also reveals the adaptation will be 3D and IMAX but aside from this little else is known. The largest question currently looming for this writer is how exactly does McElhenney plan to translate a game structure as stubbornly non-narrative as Minecraft into a feature-length film?
