Stargate is up there with the largest sci-fi franchises today. The 1994 movie that started it all, aptly titled Stargate and written by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich. It led the way for the hugely successful Stargate SG-1, which ran for a whopping 214 episodes. That show in turn led to three more spin-off, those being Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe and Stargate Infinity.

The show’s fanbase is extremely passionate, so the news of a full reboot as announced back in 2014 was met with both excitement and trepidation. Emmerich and Devlin have gone on record saying that the idea was originally meant as a trilogy. While promoting Independence Day: Resurgence, Emmerich has dropped some more tidbits.

A TRILOGY YOU SAY?

Emmerich and Devlin have gone on record saying that the original idea was for a trilogy. The past two decades have not changed their minds, and the reboot will come in the form of a movie trilogy. Emmerich confirmed that they will be starting entirely from scratch and he events of the original movie will not be considered canon.

Presumably, this means that the first movie in the reboot will begin with the discovery of the Stargate and a subsequent adventure to an alien world.

As regards the television shows, Emmerich has gone on record saying that elements of Stargate SG-1 will flow into the reboot. However, he also said that they will be side-stepping the television universe. As such, it’s hard to determine what elements he is referring to here.

To see a beloved franchise like this being rebooted is always a little worrisome for the fans. But in the hands of the people who paved the way for the show, it’s in good hands. Right?
