Since Space Jam 2 starring LeBron James was confirmed a couple months back, 90s kids everywhere have been rejoicing at the thought of reliving one of the decade’s most treasured kids movies. However, maybe we shouldn’t get too excited as Space Jam’s director Joe Pytka had some words to say about the sequel. As a word of advice for both James and director Justin Lin (Fast & Furious), Pytka is quoted as saying: “Don’t do it. It’s doomed. Michael Jordan was the biggest star on the planet.”

“When we did Space Jam, there was a perfect storm of players and ex-players available — Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing,” continued Pytka. “They all had a persona that complemented the film. There are none around like that now.”

Now, I can’t claim to be a big fan of the NBA, but as most 90s kids will tell you, the big appeal of Space Jam had almost nothing to do with basketball. It was just a big pile of silliness surrounding the Looney Toons with a couple of big 90s names thrown in for the hell of it, and it worked!

Whether LeBron James has as much star power as Jordan is open to discussion until the film is finished and we can judge them both equally but at the end of the day, are we really going to care who’s throwing the ball to Bugs Bunny, so long as he’s still pulling his trademark antics?

Let us know your opinion in the comments below. Do you agree the sequel is doomed or are you bouncing with excitement for it?
