Fans of the long running Dragon Quest franchise have been very happy as of late, with Dragon Quest 11 and Heroes 2 in development along with the 3DS remakes of VII and VIII coming soon, there has never been a better time to be into the series. Another title, Dragon Quest Builders, released in Japan early this year, but will now release in the West this October. The news comes from The Playstation blog, where we learned that Square Enix’s take on Minecraft will release for PS4 and PS Vita (digital only) this October.

Dragon Quest Builders has a surprisingly unique story set up for this type of game, being a pseudo sequel to the first Dragon Quest title. Set in a timeline where the hero from the original game was tempted by the Dragonlord instead of defeating him, ushering in a new realm of darkness that only you, the nameless builder, can fix. You play as a boy or girl who has the power of the Legendary Builder and can bring the world back to its former glory and stop the evil Dragonlord once and for all.

Dragon Quest is a series that while is rooted deeply in JRPG trends, isn’t afraid to change genres in their spin off titles. Whether its collectible monsters, hack and slash or MMORPG, Dragon Quest has changed and adapted to fit the trends of the games industry, this time trying the popular sandbox crafting gameplay made popular by Minecraft.

Dragon Quest Builders will release for PS4 and PS Vita this October.
