The production designer needs to represent the characters in much the same way as costumes and make up. Australian production designer Owen Paterson, who made his name with The Matrix Trilogy and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, recently spoke to Hitffx about how his work on Captain America: Civil War reveals information about the characters the audience wouldn’t immediately pick up on.
One of the most interesting points made is that The Russo Brothers’ idea for Peter Parker’s bedroom. “[They] brothers wanted something that was very very ordinary, like a real 16-year-old kid would live in but they didn’t want to decorate it with posters or anything like that. You kind of got the feeling that he and his aunt hadn’t been there a huge amount of time. I imagine it’s a very temporary space that they’re in.”
