Welcome one and all to the latest instalment of Otaku Digest, the spring season has well and truly kicked off with a bang considering there are some amazing titles making their debut this season including last week’s Ace Attorney anime and an upcoming rebooted Beyblade title. There are some seriously exciting titles upcoming in this season but we want to know what you are watching? What series have jumped out at you that maybe you would not have considered before?

The winter season gave us some real stand out titles but the spring season is already starting to bear some very fruitful titles thus far. As for this week we have 12-sai, Chiccha na Mune no Tokimeki and Boku no Hero Academia.

12-sai, Chiccha na Mune no Tokimeki

First up this week we have the romance, shoujo and school anime 12-sai, Chiccha na Mune no Tokimeki or Age 12 a Little Heart Pounding which was adapted from the manga called 12-sai and an OVA called 12-sai, Kiss, Kirai, Suki that first aired on April 4. This anime introduces us to a sixth grade little girl called Hanabi. Hanabi is neither a child nor an adult, the way she deals with issues is different to the other children around her just like seeing her homeroom teacher kissing. She also worries about going through physiological changes and experiences before her friends. In this anime we see a 12 year old girl’s life of worrying about innocent little worries that come with the age and finding her first love.

What is weird for me going into this anime was the fact it is essentially a slice of life anime but what was refreshing about the concept was the fact it is very close to reality, these are genuine things that young people worry and freak out over which seems silly to those who are older but everyone remembers that time in their life. First anime you committed the worst sin that an anime can commit and is unfortunately a crime committed very commonly in anime is that the entire story and the possible plot twist are all revealed in the opening theme but I will say it is revealed very quickly in this episode where the plot would be going. Something I did like about this anime was the light-hearted feel it had through the entire episode even when there is a moment that in real life is a very emotional time for a young woman was made into a light-hearted adventure while still showing the emotional effect on the girl herself and those who have not had it happen yet. I was shocked to actually find myself enjoying the anime as it went on, although there was no real action or adventure in the anime it was very entertaining to watch and you can actually relate to the characters and their experiences.

Will I Continue to Watch: Although I enjoyed it, I don’t think it is a contender.

Boku no Hero Academia

Next up to the plate is Boku no Hero Academia or My Hero Academia which is an adventure, action, shounen, comedy and super power anime which originally aired on April 3 and was also adapted from a manga of the same name. Set in a world where 80 percent of the population of the world have revealed strange but outstanding super powers which have come to be known as Quirks, the powers usually manifest at age four. What would you do in this world? Needless to say there are battling heroes and villains all over the place. With so many people with powers popping up there is of course need for there to be a place for those to go and study their powers. That place is U.A. High’s Hero Program but then there are those who are born Quirkless, what happens to those?

One of those is Izuku Midoriya a middle school student who wants nothing more than to be a hero. His hopes and dreams of getting into the Hero Program are nearly dead in the ground mainly because he holds no powers whatsoever. That is until he has a chance meeting with All Might who is known to be the greatest hero of all, All Mights decides to give him a chance to reach his dreams and change his destiny.

I have a serious issue with super power anime these days as they are now a dime a dozen really having become very popular in recent years but we always hold out hope that maybe a title will come and blow us away like One Punch Man did seasons ago. This anime kicked off in a great way with a high energy get up and dance opening theme that truly does set the stage for the anime to come, let’s hope it can live up to it. Obviously the first thing that needs a mention here is the art style of this anime, it is impeccable. I enjoyed the different style it took all round being a lot rougher around the edges in a more action comic book feel style of animation, every frame of background and even down to the character designs all added to the episode. Another aspect that this anime did really well was the balance between action packed battles and the comic relief that fills in the gaps, even though there was a lot of comic relief it was done in perfect balance with the action packed super power based fights that are in this episode. Nothing major goes down in this episode as it is mainly an introduction episode but it did lay the ground work for what could be a great series.

Will I Continue to Watch: Yes, I actually enjoyed this a lot and look forward to more
