Who Is Falcon?

FalconFlying into the comics for the first time in 1969 (Captain America #117), Sam Wilson was the first African-American hero to ever feature in any of Marvel’s comic series. Sam has an affinity to birds,  having trained pigeons in his youth, and he, alongside and his pet falcon Redwing spent their early comic years taking down Hydra shoulder to shoulder with Captain America.

In more recent years, Wilson himself has become Captain America, equipped with Steve Rodger’s shield and retaining his mechanical wings.

Portrayed by Anthony Mackie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Falcon soared into action for the first time in Captain America: Winter Soldier. Wilson also made two brief cameos in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Firstly in the party scene where he explains to Cap he is still searching for Bucky, and then later in the final moments where Cap made him an official member of the Avengers.

More recently, the new Avenger Falcon showed up in Ant-Man when Scott Lang attempted to break into the Avengers facility to steal some Pym tech. Let’s hope Cap never found out about how that fight went down.

What Are Falcon’s Powers?

In the comics, Falcon has a connection to birds thanks to the cosmic cube, and has the ability to communicate with his trusted pet falcon Redwing should he ever require assistance.

In the movies however this is not the case, and in Civil War, Redwing is a mechanical bird drone as opposed to a living Falcon. However we’re sure the effects will be similar and the MCU Redwing will no doubt allow Falcon to scout out situations without the need to go blindly into action.

Falcon is capable of flying due to his mechanical wings tucked inside a pack on his back, which allow him to manoeuvre and fly at speed like a fighter jet. These wings are vulnerable however, as we saw in Winter Soldier, where they were ripped apart like paper, taking Falcon out of the fray for a while.

We also seen in Ant-Man and Winter Soldier,  Falcon knows his way around a pistol or two, and his brief military training have granted him some combat skills which we have seen in his brief action sequences to date.

Why Is Falcon On Team Cap?

Having formed somewhat of a bromance with Rodgers, it’s no surprise that Wilson has stood by his friend in this Civil War. Now acquainted with Scott Lang too, Wilson is able to recruit him to Cap’s squad too making this one diverse team of abilities.

We know that since Winter Soldier ended, Cap and Falcon have been continuously searching for Bucky, and the Ant-Man post credit scenes do confirm that they will eventually trap the Winter Soldier once and for all. But it remains to be seen how their alliance truly falls into place.

Falcon soars back to theatres in Captain America: Civil War on April 29.
