Late ’80s cult sci-fi horror/comedy Killer Klowns From Outer Space may be making a comeback in the form of a TV series.

In an interview with Movie Crypt Podcast, the film’s director and co-writer Stephen Chodo stated that a follow-up of some sort has been in the works for a while now. What form that follow-up will take hasn’t been fully worked out, but Chodo begins by saying that they’re looking at a “long-arch series for cable”, ending the segment adding that the idea is for the 25 years after the movie takes place to be the subject matter.

His full answer in between these two points of information is a little less direct though. Chodo coins the term “requel” describing how the idea is somewhere between a sequel and a remake, before then talking it up as a “trilogy in four parts”. The former makes sense – a sequel that covers the same kind of story setup as the original film – but a trilogy in four parts? How does that fit into a cable show?

If as much is true that the idea is something for TV, Killer Klowns could be a hit. With American Horror Story and the return of Tales From The Crypt, there’s a wave of horror television that could help this get a pretty substantial audience. Chodos certainly has his options too, with Netflix and Amazon streaming doing original shows now, too.
