It’s that time of the week again, where we sort through the hordes of Netflix’s worst and greatest to find our ‘number one’ Yesflix and our ‘should be avoided at all costs’ NoFlix. This week we’re bringing you a double dose of teen girl-power. Brace yourselves.
YESFLIX: Little Witch Academia
Little Witch Academia is a Japanese anime movie that was released in 2013, created and directed by Yoh Yoshinari and written by Masahiko Otsuka.
Inspired by her idol the elegant Shiny Chariot from a young age, and charmed by her colourful displays of magic, the movie’s protagonist Akko, enrolls in the Luna Nova Magical Academy. While at the academy Akko finds two unlikely friends in Lotte and Sucy, where their adventure to locate some ancient treasures finds them face to face with a powerful dragon that Akko’s rival, Diana accidentally unleashes.
Little Witch Academia is a movie that successfully channels the classic magic school tropes that have been timelessly popular through the years. With parallels to shows like The Worst Witch and Sabrina The Teenage Witch or even to series like Harry Potter . Little Witch Academia is charmingly loveable.
The art style is simplistic, yet the character designs are unique and expressive, which compliments the tone the movie conveys. There is also a quirky charm to each of the characters, and at times it’s hard not to chuckle at their silly antics, and expressions.
All in all, Little Witch Academia is the ideal movie, if you just want to chill for the evening. Bear in mind, it has not been dubbed, so you will have to read subtitles. But if you can deal with with that, you’ll probably find yourself wanting more once you’re done. Which, luckily, you will also be able to find. The Little Witch Academia sequel was released in 2015, so hopefully that will also find its way to Netflix soon.
Fans of magical schools and cute anime will LOVE this.
NOFLIX: Mean Girls 2
“So, like, this movie is like, totally not the best movie ever” is probably what I would be saying if I allowed this movie to melt my mind into a shallow pool of goo.
Mean Girls 2 is, as you probably never would have guessed, a sequel to the cult classic Mean Girls. A movie that originated some of the most overly used quotes in the history of ever. From ‘You go Glen Coco’ to ‘She doesn’t even go here’. We’ve all probably heard at least one Mean Girls quote at some stage in our lives.
Unfortunately, Mean Girls 2 just doesn’t meet that standard. Jam packed and overflowing with Disney Channel stars, Mean Girls 2 follows a similar plot to the original film, with a new group of popular girls, once again known as ‘the plastics’., a mutual love interest, and a tumultuous rivalry that can only be resolved…through sport! (Wait what?)
Mean Girls 2 also introduces the anti-plastics, aka, the not so popular girls. These girls that are darn right set on taking out the trash…and by trash, I mean, plastic trash. It gets nasty!
Lets be real, this movie was made in an attempt to cash in on a cult classic hit. It failed. It’s not the worst movie in existence. But it is not even marginally in the same league as the original Mean Girls.
If you enjoy the original Mean Girls, you will HATE this.
