Phone Graphics In Mobile Gaming To Match PS4 Graphics Within A Year
It is not unknown that the graphics in smartphones and tablets have improved significantly in the last few years but according to ARM, a producer of mobile graphics processors it is said that the graphics will match those of PS4 and Xbox consoles within the next year or so.
Speaking at the Casual Connect conference in Amsterdam, as reported by VentureBeat, ARM’s ecosystem director Nizar Romdan said “If you take today’s high-end smart phone or tablet, the performance is already better than Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It’s catching up quickly with Xbox One and PlayStation 4.”
Romdan has predicted that the mobile processing power will be around 2 tera FLOPS (floating operations per second) by the end of 2017 which is more than the PS4 or Xbox One.
That being said it doesn’t account for the mobile gaming problems such as battery life and overheating of the device. However Romdan believes that this growth will be a boon for smartphones especially with the technology advances of virtual reality.
“Our view is that mobile VR is the use case that could unlock the potential of mobile for hardcore gamers,” he said. “For once, mobile devices are on par with PC and consoles in terms of experience . We won’t have the same processing. And battery life is a problem. But it is the same user experience. That could be a game changer for mobile gaming.”
