*Fair warning, this article will contain mild spoilers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but in fairness you really should have had the cop-on to see it by now*

It was a great surprise to many of us when the Leia Organa of the original Star Wars Trilogy; princess, Rebel Alliance Operative, had grown to become General Leia, leader of the Resistance. Furthermore, Leia ended the original trilogy not only revealing her knowledge of her biological parentage, but also displayed a level of Force-awareness. Surely she went through a sizeable amount of character development between the two trilogies?

This is precisely the idea which Claudia Gray aims to explore in her novel Star Wars: Bloodline. The novel takes place several years before The Force Awakens and explores Leia’s role as a senator in the New Republic. According to Gray the novel will explore “the role she’s created for herself since the fall of the Empire, and the one she takes up by the time of the film.” While it would probably be rather optimistic to expect the origins of the First Order to be revealed, readers may at least gain more of an understanding of the New Republic as it functioned after the defeat of the Emperor.

The book is slated for a May 3 2016 release.
