As this weekend’s Saturday correspondent, Laura chose “weird and wonderful” for her theme. I’m determined to stick to the themes as much as possible, so I’m plunged the depths of my imagination and came up with something a bit barmy to share, which also happens to be Alice in Wonderland-themed!
Yousei Teikoku are a Japanese band which fuse elements of gothic rock, EDM, classical and J-pop music into one wierd-ass hybrid. But the weirdness doesn’t end there. Their other name, Das Feenreich roughly translates to ‘the faerie empire’. So, they’re a gothic fairy-mythology themed rock band. Okay, that’s weird. Throw in some lolita-style clothing and visual kei touches too, why not? But you want to know the weirdest part? Their lead singer, Yui Itsuki, uses the title ‘Dictator for Life’. And some of their videos are a bit, er…totalitarian. So, in conclusion, they’re a totalitarian faerie-themed gothic lolita visual kei orchestral EDM pop-rock band.
What the hell, Japan?
Anyway, that’s about one of the weirdest bands I could come up with for today’s theme, and ‘Mischievous of Alice’ throws allusions to Lewis Carroll’s classic on top of that. It’s also a damn catchy song, easily one of their best and despite my usual dislike of kawaii-sounding high-pitched female vocals, Yousei Teikoku gets a pass because the music is really good and because they’re so. Bloody. Weird!
