Security Threat Can Turn BB-8 To The Dark Side
It has been announced recently that Sphero’s BB-8 appears to have a security risk after a firmware update was pushed through.
The firmware update has inadvertently given people the ability to hijack your droid. The update is done over insecure HTTP without the use of SSL. With the BB-8 being controlled through a smartphone app with no security in pairing the devices, you could run the risk of someone being able to hack into the droid and your network.
So what does this mean? In fairness, there isn’t a lot that can be done to the droid to call for a firmware release to resolve the issue. At most, it would allow the hacker to load rogue firmware on the device that will allow them to remote control BB-8, essentially turning it to the dark side (get it?).
There are no sensors or personal information stored within the droid so there is little need to worry.
The hacker will need to be within Bluetooth range to do this so there is a very slim risk that your BB-8 will turn to the Knights Of Ren and abandon you.
