One of the most talented, loved and iconic British actors, Alan Rickman, has died after a battle with cancer at the age of 69.

His death was today confirmed by his family who said that “he died surrounded by family and friends”.

Rickman was well known for his numerous and prolific roles, namely and perhaps most famously as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies and Hans Gruber in Die Hard, but also in Dogma, Love Actually, Sense and Sensibility, Sweeney Todd, The Butler and as Eamon DeValera in Michael Collins, to name but a few.

Not only is Rickman‘s death a loss to the world of acting, it is also a loss to the world of philanthropy; Rickman supported many causes including Make Poverty History, Peace One Day and Save the Children. He made Closet Land in 1991 in support of Amnesty International.

Rickman‘s final film, Eye in the Sky, will be released on March 11 this year.

RIP Alan Rickman.

“To the well-organised mind, death is but the next great adventure.” – Albus Dumbledore

  1. Wow. I can’t believe he’s gone. His portrayal of Hans Gruber in Die Hard was one of the most iconic and memorable villains of well…ever. Not to mention, he was Severus freaking Snape. R.I.P Alan Rickman
