We all figured it would happen, but it’s nice to be proven right. As of right now, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has raked in between $55 and $57 million for its Thursday night previews and between $241 and $246 million in opening weekend takings in America. The global weekend is said to be $528 million, which means that every box office record has been destroyed by the sci-fi sequel.

The only record it mightn’t break is international box office for opening weekend, which Jurassic World dominates. The Force Awakens does come with the caveat of not opening in China, a major market in the international box office, until early January, so until then we won’t a “complete” international box office opening weekend for the film. But, that’s if it doesn’t meet the current predictions which it’s very much on track to do.

Not that that matters much, odds are high that Star Wars is going to set quite a record for overall box office takings. High end projections land at 2 billion, which look very likely considering the movie is already a quarter of the way there within under a week. Reviews and fan reaction have been resoundingly positive, too, so the many, many re-watches should make sure The Force Awakens has truly reawoken the force on the big screen.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is in cinemas now.
