Shawn Ashmore Interested In Playing Gay Iceman
Actor Shawn Ashmore, perhaps best known for his role as Iceman from the X-Men movies has discussed his interest and the possibility of playing the recently outed character in future movies.
In an interview with IGN, Ashmore spoke about the character and how his movie version could be tied to the comic book counterpart:
“Obviously the comics and movies are separate. I wonder what the transition would be because we’ve sort of established Bobby as having a love interest in Rogue and having a love interest in sort of Kitty Pryde, but I think it’d be really interesting.”
The actor went on further to explain that even though the character has had some pretty amazing scenes on screen it could be one of the most interesting things to happen to Iceman, “I think it’d probably be the most interesting thing that could happen to Bobby in the films.”
On a personal note, it would be fantastic to see an openly gay member of the X-Men on the big screen. In X-2 Bobby has a coming out scene of sorts when he has to explain to his parents his prep school does more than prepare him for college and he is in fact a mutant. It’s a powerful scene and critics and LGBTQ fans were quick to highlight the similar experience shared by members of the gay community and their own coming out moments.
