A TV series based on the 2014 film Snowpiercer is being produced with The Sarah Connor Chronicles creator Josh Friedman in the driver’s seat. The film’s director, Bong Joon-Ho, and the film’s producer, Oldboy director Chan-wook Park, will serve as Executive Producers.

Snowpiercer became an instant cult phenomenon last year when it released. Starring Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton and John Hurt, the film is a minimalist dark sci-fi epic that follows the impoverished inhabitants of a train containing the last human life on earth leading a revolt against the oppressive forces that be while said train chugs around the earth in a non-stop loop.

Taking in a meager audience on its limited theatrical run, the movie found a large following via VOD and a DVD/Blu-Ray release due to its dark tones, star power and generally esoteric approach to typical blockbuster science fiction.

Outside of The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Friedman‘s screenwriting work includes 2005’s War of the Worlds and the upcoming Avatar 2, so he’s very much a mixed bag in terms of quality. In a statement on the project, he said:

“I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity. Marty and Becky are the perfect partners to help me bring this world to TV. I’m a huge fan of director Bong’s films, especially Snowpiercer. It’s great the way the best sci-fi is great — thoughtful, political, funny, scary and sly. And it’s on a train. A big f—ing train. What more could you want?”

There is as yet no production schedule for the TV series.
