Disney and Lucasfilm have joined forces with Google to create a Star Wars theme for Google apps including Google Maps, Gmail, Search and YouTube.

Check out www.Google.com/starwars where you will be able to choose your side – Jedi Masters such as Qui-Gon Jin and Obi Wan or the Dark Side such as Darth Maul, Palapatine or Vader.

Once you choose your side the following will happen to various apps

Gmail – Depending on what side you choose your loading bar will change to a lightsaber. The Gmail background display will also change depending on the side you choose.

Maps – You will head to your destination with the help of a TIE fighter or X wing. The little orange guy that tells you where you are will also change but I won’t spoil it on you 🙂

Chrome – A custom chrome extension will show new Star Wars images every time you open a new tab

YouTube – Light or Dark side lightsaber transforms your seeker bar and volume control.

Calendar – Star Wars movie “milestones” will be added to your calendar.

Vice President of Product Manager in Google Clay Bavor said that he and other Google engineers are die-hard Star Wars fans dreamed up the epic theme. “You can regularly spot Darth Vaders, dogs dressed like Yoda, and even the occasional stormtrooper, roaming the halls of our data centers (probably still looking for those droids),” Bavor wrote in a blog post. “So when we first heard about Episode VII, we started thinking about what a Google tribute to these epic stories might look like: ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if there was some Star Wars thingy in Search? The Millennium Falcon in Cardboard would be sweet! What if Google Translate could decipher galactic languages?;… and on, and on, and on.”

Arcadians should expect more Google issued fandom before the film is released Dec 18 such as the Millenium Falcon in virtual reality, Bavor says.

Bavor has also mentioned that there are  a few hidden Easter eggs as it stands so get hunting!
