The UK Government and Cyber Security Challenge have launced a 3D video game platform that hopes to find the next generation of talented cybersecurity people.

Funded by the Cabinet Office, a virtual skyscraper has been created that will host a series of challenges to complement the Cyber Security Challenge, which recruits people through gaming.

“Amidst the chronic shortage of cyber-professionals, there is a wealth of talent which is still untapped,” said Stephanie Daman, head of the Cyber Security Challenge, in a statement. “This is the next logical step to inspire an audience who may not yet even know that cyber is the career for them.”

The Play-on-Demand platform uses Unity’s Web player and is home to a virtual skyscraper called Cyphinx which is where the challenges are to take place. The tower will act as a hub for the community which people can meet and see how they react when facing problems with cyber security.

In total, there are 14 games with some created using Minecraft by the children from the Cyber Security Challenge in the UK. Each floor will contain different challenges, competitions and games covering forensics, network defence and risk analysis.

To play, users must register with an avatar that they can help guide them through the challenges. Those who register can chat to experienced professionals who can help them with the tougher challenges or give hints to help them with the puzzles. As everyone works through the challenges, they are scored, and results are saved onto a leaderboard which creates a digital CV in the process.

At the moment, the challenge can be taken on Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari but it is only available to citizens of the EU and the UK.

Anyone who is interested can sign up to Cyphinx on the Cyber Security Challenge UK website.
