Deus Ex: Mankind Divided‘s ‘Augment Your Pre-Order’ system received a significant backlash after its announcement, having been widely criticized by well-known critics including Jim Sterling and TotalBiscuit. In essence, the system was that the more people who pre-ordered, the more content would be unlocked for those who pre-ordered. So, for example, if enough people pre-ordered to unlock a tier there would be an entire mission added to the game, but if they didn’t hit that target, then no-one would get that mission at all.

Square Enix and Eidos-Montreal have announced via the game’s official website that the system has been scrapped entirely, with all of the content originally locked off into tiers now being available to anyone who pre-orders the game. The news post directly states the “resounding amount of negative feedback” as the cause for this change.

It’s a change for the better in every way compared to the controversial system that was previously in place. Obviously, the ideal situation for consumers would be to put all that content in the game from the beginning and negate the need for pre-orders at all, but it’s still the AAA gaming industry after all.
