It’s been clear for a while now that Hugh Jackman‘s days playing Wolverine are coming to an end. However, in a press day for Pan, in which he is playing the villainous Blackbeard, the actor confirmed that Patrick Stewart will be appearing in a story role beyond a cameo.

Jackman is interested in exploring the “quasi-father/son sort of relationship” which Professor X and Wolverine share. Fleshing out their relationship makes sense, given James McAvoy‘s darker take on the character and the likelihood that the next few films will be prequels focusing on the younger selves of the X-Men.

Given the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, much of the previous two Wolverine film plots may well have been completely erased. Jackman has all but cofirmed that his last appearance as Wolverine will be based on the comic Old Man Logan, which see’s an older Wolverine in a world where the villains rule the world. Could the last Wolverine solo film decide to explore the erased timeline from DoFP, allowing a new Wolverine to be introduced for the new movies?

Where does this leave us? How have the characters interacted in this new time-line? Can we expect to see Ian McKellen to appear as the aged Magneto? Let us know what you think in the comments!
