Otaku Digest: An Avoidable Summer Season

Hello one and all to another instalment of Otaku Digest, we are still a few weeks away from the beginning of the Fall anime season and of course still playing catch up on the summer season, although there was no heavy hitters we are giving proper time to the few anime that were worth sticking with. However, the summer anime season was so bad that there is more avoidable anime to name and shame than good anime to compliment. This is something we have never done before here on Otaku Digest and we hope this will be the last time ever but for shame summer season, for shame.

The obvious disclaimer, I did not continue to watch these anime and my opinion is based on my first impression but they are being named and shamed for the fact they left a horrible taste in my mouth following watching them. Now if you have watched ahead and think these are worth defending please let me know in the comments, for now however the following anime are my avoidable choices for the summer season, I am not numbering them as they are near equally as terrible but there will be a number 1 must avoid anime.

Bikini Warriors

21192-R8Tx2XvdJHBB-202x285First is probably one of the most pointless anime to have ever been released, ever. This list is going to make it seem like I really harp on about fan service as a genre because let’s face it some of these anime have different genres slapped on just to cover what they are which is borderline hentai. Fan service when used right can be brilliant but in these cases it missed the curve by about a mile, yes I am talking about Bikini Warriors. They do call it a parody anime but it goes beyond parody into idiocy very quickly. One of the anime shorts we looked at only a few weeks ago on Otaku Digest it was an unwelcome viewing.

Set in a RPG fantasy style world it is where magic and swords are completely the norm and we are introduced to the bikini clad ladies of the anime, Paladin, Fighter, Mage and Dark Elf who have come together to protect the world from ultimate destruction. They come against many foe in the process including bartering with simple towns folk and all while scantily clad in bikinis. First off, I get the parody, it is trying to make fun of a type of genre which would be fine but the way it has been done just is not funny, it was uncomfortable to watch. The whole anime is based on a line of figures which undeniably is a pretty gutsy move for the creatures but they literally just animated figures, there was no story even for a short, they tried on clothes, fought some monsters and tried on more clothes that is it. Not to mention the fact there was far too much effort from an animation point of view to make those bosoms jiggle like that. Bikini Warriors is an adventure I think I will stay at home for.

Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou

monstermusume

This anime took fan service borderline hentai to a whole other level, that is saying something considering the above and below anime featured this week. Translated this anime is Everyday Life With Monsters Girls and at least it knew kind of what it was very much labeling itself a harem ecchi anime but it really took the biscuit. The premise of the anime is we have a world where now centaurs, harpies, cat girls and other mythical creatures are roaming out world no longer fiction or fantasy. The government in an attempt to help the creatures integrate themselves in everyday society by passing the Cultural Exchange Between Species Act. Kurusu Kimihito winds up mistaken as a volunteer gets lumped with a half snake girl called Miia. Given Miia is smoking hot it becomes a difficult situation for them considering there is strict laws between inter species hanky-panky. Things do not get better for him when more creatures come to stay.

You know what I cannot even really give this anime too hard of a time because it knew what it was and you are warned realistically in the summary. What got to me was the instant jump into the fan service and borderline hentai aspects of the series, in the first few minutes we bear witness to what can only be described as phallic motions on a snake’s tail with sounds to match. A simple image search of this anime really does give you all you need to know. Once again and this is the main issue I have with anime like this, there is no story, they attempt with this crap little love story but really what was they even based on? Hanky-panky! I have heard from people who did watch on that there is no development later on only adding to frustrations with fan service based anime. Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou has monsters but girl it was a monster.

Kangoku Gakuen Prison School

If this was a top whatever list this anime would take home the gold stinker of the year prize. It physically hurts me when I have to type words about this pile of trash. Based in the Hachimitsu Private Academy which is located on the outskirts of Tokyo has been known as one of the most elite and prestigious all girl boarding school in the country. The winds of change are blowing at the academy however with the new school year boys will be allowed to enroll in the school. One of those is Kiyoshi Fujino who quickly realizes he is one of only five other boys who enrolled in the academy. Outnumbered in their thousands to the female’s students they must not put a foot out of line as the underground student council could find out and who knows what could happen to them then.

First off this anime is everything I hate about anime, terrible story, in your face fan service and completely degrading of both sexes. I have heard it said it is an equal opportunities offender, since it demoralizes both sexes and not just the females. True, I take the point but take a look at how the males are demoralized which borders on more bondage, fetish and pain than the fan service used with the female characters. I also understand it is meant to be a comedic anime and borders even on dark comedy but I just cannot see the funny in this anime, there is so much crap in it where it tries to be funny and how do they mask it? Fan service and the male students being tortured in what I have to say are imaginative ways with a woman whose bosom defies all sorts of gravity. Something I find interesting about the people who have stayed watching is the fact they say it is so bad I cannot help but watch. The anime is so terrible people are sticking it out just to see if it either gets better or gets worse. It pains me even more that this trash above other more deserving anime is having a live action adaptation. I would rather go to prison than watch Kangoku Gakuen Prison School.

Here is to a better fall anime season! Did you watch these anime? Feel different to me? Let us know in the comments!
