Now that Metal Gear Solid V is out in the world once and for all, fans all around the world have to accept that definitively, the game marks the end of Hideo Kojima‘s Metal Gear saga. Truly, nobody could’ve predicted that it would end as unceremoniously and, frankly, ugly as it did with Konami scrubbing Kojima‘s name from the packaging of the game after a less than happy ending to the pair’s working relationship.

In a heartfelt debriefing video, Hideo Kojima is filmed meeting high-profile members of the press and games industry who discuss both Metal Gear Solid and Kojima‘s influence on gaming as a whole. While not exactly a humbling video, what with Kojima sitting right beside these other personalities as they talk about how great his games are, the highlight is the second half.

During crunch time for The Phantom Pain, Kojima received a letter from a huge fan of the MGS series which made such an impression on him that he showed it to the team, thus causing the letter to be a huge source of inspiration for the team to see the project through to completion. Sadly, that fan passed away from cancer not long after that letter was sent.

To repay both that fan and his family for the warm wishes, Kojima visited the family home and spoke to the family at length about the young man, named Sean Gillespie, about what MGS meant to him and how he helped make sure Metal Gear Solid V reached completion. And in what is perhaps the most beautiful moment of the video, Hideo Kojima delivers a signed copy of The Phantom Pain to Sean’s room, now a haven for his memory and collection, so that it may live in his memory also.

The ten minute feature ends with Hideo Kojima thanking the fans for their support, this now being his last official message as both a member of Konami and the director of Metal Gear Solid. You can watch the video in full below:
