Gif Essay: Conquering The Collection
Around once a year, it comes time to accept that piles and piles (and piles) of stuff that’s been purchased over the last 10-12 months needs proper cataloging and putting away. Being a comic, movie, game and music collector, there’s always a pile somewhere of fresh additions to the collection that need to be suitably experienced, rated and then assimilated into their spot on the shelf. And if you’re anything like me, the process is arduous because you always leave it too long and have a mountain to climb!
Listing Everything. EVERYTHING.
We all have excel spreadsheets of our stuff, right? By creator, title and date bought? No? Whatever. There’s a distinct hopelessness that becomes putrid joy when a metric ton of stuff goes from being disorganized piles into being part of the hive that is my own home system. Nothing escapes my grasp, and once they’re in there there’s no going back. You’re mine now. Forever.
Assorting Into Particular Piles.
It’s like heroine when the huge pile is split into various smaller piles that each have their own purpose. By alphabet? By color? By release year? There’s so many ways to get them ready for their space in the herd. Honestly, this might be my favorite phase. When I get to see my newbies join my collection for real.
Making Space.
Yes, this should be earlier. But in case you aren’t aware, I’ve the time management capabilities of a slowpoke on acid. So, everything is neatly segregated to the appropriate piles and now it’s time for entry into the storage boxes and shelves. But room is scant, so more must be created. Time to go the haven of furniture and me looking like a failure of a human being. Oh, I got a feeling…
Attempt To Build And Fail. Over And Over. And Over.
I didn’t think this through. Why’d I choose Thursday bloody evening to make this all a reality. Bloody shelves are wobbling all over the shop and this stuff can’t sit here another day as I’m getting more of it tomorrow.
Desperation kicking in. All hope is lost.
Nah not really, just takes a little while to get the new shelves in order!
Put Everything Into Its Rightful Space.
It ain’t perfect, but there everything is. Being all nice and lovely and ready for anyone to pick up and use before returning to the proper spot.
Mmmmmm, yes…. Lovely!
Kill The Young.
Okay, that’s a bit dramatic, but the sad part of any collection getting a slight rejig is taking out the fluff. The stuff that’s unwanted or unused to a degree that its wasted on your shelf. The stuff that will one day be an embarrassing anecdote because I was once into stuff that, well, sucks.
Time to see the little ones free..
