It’s been a good year for Universal Studios with back to back box office hits such as Furious 7, Minions, Fifty Shades of Grey, Pitch Perfect 2 and Jurassic World all dominating the charts. However, it would seem that this is not only a good year for the studio, it’s the best year ever had by any studio.

With the release of the above titles, Universal Pictures has grossed over $5.53 billion in the worldwide box office, smashing the previous record of $5.52 billion set up by 20th Century Fox in 2014, and we’re only halfway through the year. Time can only tell what the end of year record will be for the studio, as it still has strong films to be released such as our editor’s favourite Jem and The Holograms and the Steve Jobs biopic to be released in October.

While other films such as Disney’s release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens will undoubtedly close the gap in numbers a fair amount, there is simply no way for any studio to beat Universal flat out this year. With that in mind, let’s extend a heartfelt congratulations to the studio from everyone at The Arcade.
