The future is fast approaching it seems. This past week has seen papers published that features work on creating a mind net between animals, one on monkeys, another on rats.
The former had a group of three monkeys controlling a robotic arm. Each of the monkeys had control of a sub portion of the arm’s movements, allowing them to move it in 2 dimensions alone, but needing to work together to move in three dimensions. Linking in this way meant the arm could continue working even when one of the monkeys became distracted.
The second paper allowed a group of rats connected by a net to react to impulses on another rat’s brain. Effectively, this meant that each rat could feel and react to what only one member of the group was experiencing. tumblr_mgnte3bpTc1qh1g19o1_400
It’s very early days yet, but this could very well be the first baby steps we take towards collective human consciousness a la Gaia from Isaac Asimov‘s Foundation series.
However this work grows, let’s hope that we don’t end up with a Borg incident on our hands.
