Michael Chiklis, best known for portraying The Shield‘s Vic Mackey, has been cast as series regular Captain Nathaniel Barnes in Gotham, TVLine is reporting.
According to the report, the character of Barnes (who doesn’t have a correlating character from the comic book universe) is someone who, “lands on the GCPD like a tornado, ripping out the dead wood of Gotham’s police force. He is a law and order zealot; unafraid of making enemies – on either side of the law. For Gordon (Ben McKenzie), Barnes is a hero and a mentor, someone with whom he can share the burden of heroism. Captain Barnes proves himself to be a strong ally to Gordon… but one day he will make an equally powerful enemy.”
All in all, he sounds absolutely tough as nails, which is a role Chiklis is used to playing after portraying one of TV’s most iconic cops for seven seasons on The Shield. But whereas Mackey was rotten to the core, who would twist the law in his favour and even work beneath it himself at times to get the job done (or just to make his own life more comfortable), Barnes seems like a paragon of procedure far removed from his previous character.
Gotham is set to return September 25. Will you be watching? Did any of you watch the first season? Let us know in the comments!
