Marvel are at it again.
Over the last while many of you have probably noticed Marvel have been dialling back their coverage of the Fantastic Four. This is happening, of course, because they’ve elected not to endorse or feed into the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot being helmed by director Josh Trank at FOX.
There’s currently no ongoing Fantastic Four comic, with the latest volume being stopped after only a few issues. There also seem to be no plans to relaunch the first family into an ongoing series as they were, again, notably absent from Marvel’s latest publishing announcement, apart from being shoehorned into other books and teams.
Other more brazen displays, of course, had been when members of the FF had been removed from classic covers and replaced with other more marketable heroes across Marvel’s merchandise. One such example is the classic cover to Marvel’s 80s crossover Secret Wars #8.
See the comparison picture below:
However, recently and more so ludicrously, Marvel have removed the Fantastic Four logo, from the Fantastic Four uniform, worn by Spider-Man in an outfit dubbed ‘The Bombastic Bag-Man’ appearing in the ‘Spider-Man: Unlimited‘ mobile game.
See again the before and after below.
To give you a little backstory, in ‘Amazing Spider-Man #258’, Reed Richards of the FF helped Spider-Man rid himself of the iconic symbiote black suit. However, having nothing to wear home, Spidey was given an old FF uniform bearing the original logo and a brown paper bag to cover his face with, while Johnny Storm (aka the Human Torch) added a ‘kick-me’ sign on the back.
This is the look that was dubbed ‘The Bombastic Bag-Man.‘ It has appeared in several video games and numerous variant covers and is a fan favourite throwback for Spider-Man fans everywhere.
The idea that Marvel would casually remove the logo from the chest and hope nobody would notice or remember the affiliation to the FF is, again, ludicrous. It’s in the suits bio for crying out loud!
Personally, I find it sad that Marvel’s first family and their fans are being forced to suffer throughout the dispute.
