Gif Essay: Fictional Love
There is no love quite like fictional love and if you don’t know what I’m talking about right now, it’s best to move on so this doesn’t get awkward. My first crush, the actual first time I ever got butterflies in my tummy was when I saw Lion-O from the Thundercats... listen I don’t know what that says about me either but five-year old me was a legend!
Although I’ve grown up and ‘matured’, my love for cartoons has never gone away and neither has my ability to crush on characters. Now however the crush follows a series of gut wrenching and heart twisting stages… thankfully I’m just over the final stage of my crush on The Legend of Korra’s Bolin.
For those of you out there (and I really hope there are more weirdos romantics out there like me), here’s how to spot your crush on a cartoon and identify your stage… and for those of you would like to just ridicule me, here’s exactly how my crush on Bolin took off before crashing and burning!
Stage 1 – What a cool guy… I guess…
Feels like I’ve been hit by a tonne of bricks! Earthbenders are cool, Toph was totally cool but this guy is nothing like her! He’s kind of dorky but he seems nice and hey, he can hold his own in the pro-bending arena. What’s his name again? Bowling?
Stage 2 – No, this can’t be happening… again!
Walls up! Don’t let yourself get caught up in this! He’s a cartoon character for the love of God! Sure, he’s super nice, funny, cute and he seems like the perfect boyfriend material but there’s one thing getting in the way… he’s not real!
Stage 3 – The awkward phase!
It’s not real! You’re not real! This can’t work!
Stage 4 – Ooommph!
Now you’re not playing fair! You can’t just bring out the big guns and don’t even get me started on the Nuk Tuk outfit!
Stage 5 – Yes we can get a pet!
You’re right! We’re at the next phase of our relationship and we totally should adopt a cute pet! Dare I even bring up the idea of getting a tattoo?
Stage 6 – You are my world!
Don’t get me wrong, the show is great but wouldn’t it be so much better it was called ‘The Legend of Bolin and his friend Avatar Korra’! Honestly it really would and I’m not just saying that because I’m obsessed with you!
Stage 7 – The sudden realisation!
I’ve met your friends and you’ve just met mine! Fine, they didn’t think you were the best thing about the show but they didn’t have to be so mean about it! Look it doesn’t matter, I like you and that’s all that matters… right?
Stage 8 – It’s not you! It’s me!
I can’t do this anymore! I’m sorry, it’s just… we’re both from different worlds! I want to ship us forever but it won’t, it can’t last! I’m sorry!
Stage 9 – We’ll always have Paris!
It’s over! The show is over! You’re going your way and I’m going mine and though we’ll be a part, we’ll always have the memories! I promise not to forget you … until the next big show happens…
Bolin who?
Editor-in-Chief, part-time super villain and hoarder of cats. If you can’t find me writing, I’m probably in the kitchen!
