Disney Making Live-Action Aladdin Prequel Titled Genies
Any child of the 80s and 90s will remember the iconic, and widely loved character that was Genie from Disney’s Aladdin. Genie was the light hearted comic relief that had every last one of us singing ‘You ain’t never had a friend like me!’ until we were as blue in the face as Genie himself. With the recent passing of the beloved Robin Williams, who voiced the character, many of us thought that Genie would be laid to rest as well. However, it would seem Disney has other ideas.
Reported by THR, the studio is currently making plans for a live action prequel to Aladdin, said to be named Genies, in which we hear the story of how Genie came to be trapped in the lamp. Although Genies is still in the early stages of development, there are hopes that it will eventually lead to another live action adaption of Aladdin itself.
Genies is currently being written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, known for their early work in horror movies such as Freddy Vs. Jason and the remake of Friday the 13th. Though it is merely speculation, this could indicate an interest in telling a much grittier story than what we know and love from our childhood. Only time will tell, however we at The Arcade will be keeping you up to date as more news is revealed.
