Welcome back to your must-have guide to Netflix! Why read Yesflix/Noflix? We do all the watching for you, so you know what you should cancel all your plans to binge-watch and what you shouldn’t waste your time with! This week, I am going to compare two very similar shows in terms of cast and style. We will be taking a look at two very similar yet very different comedy shows, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Community.

YesFlix – It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 19.28.49Let’s starts off with my favourite. This show is just brilliant and absolutely hilarious. It has that excellent mix of comedy that is both smart and stupid, which is hard to pull off. The basic concept of the show is that three friends Dennis, Mac and Charlie buy an Irish bar together to pull in women. Dennis’ sister Dee is then hired as the barmaid and half way into the first season Frank (Danny DeVito) joins the cast as Dennis and Dee’s father. The concept quickly evolves into Frank lending money all the time so the whole cast can think up stupid schemes and wreak havoc all around town. Nobody is safe. I think the best part about this show overall is just how much the gang doesn’t care about anyone but themselves, and that includes others in the gang! With all that being said, let us take a quick look at what each character offers:
Dee (Kaitlin Olson) – She is the kind sweetheart known as sweet Dee. This name is of course ironic as Dee is all about herself and is far from sweet. She is also the butt end of every joke which, as an audience, we’ve come to expect and love.
Charlie (Charlie Day) – This guy is a bit of an odd ball to put it lightly. He is madly in love with a waiter who they all call ‘the waitress’. He will never get her, but it’s fun trying! He is also kind of a dumb character.
Frank (Danny DeVito) – Frank is the money behind everything. He funds the madness. He has recently left his wife and is constantly looking for women to have a little fun with (much lie DeVito himself…)
Mac (Rob McElhenney) – He is the good old christian party boy (if there is such a thing). Mac is basically crazy for fitness and God, even though he is a little on the gay side too.
Dennis (Glenn Howerton) – Dennis just plain loves himself and has referred to himself as a God both personally and physically. He thinks he is the most gorgeous guy in the world and even has a system to getting women that is just plain creepy.
Fans of Archer, Inside Amy Schumer and How I Met Your Mother will love this!

NoFlix – Community

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 19.39.08Every person I know keeps going on about this show, especially when I say I watch It’s Always Funny in Philadelphia. I really don’t understand why. The show is basically about another gang of people, all of whom are students in a community college (hence the name) who spend their days faffing about campus doing very little in terms of either study or comedy. There is, in fairness, a wide range of characters in the cast who all have their own identity and traits, but the only person who is remotely any good is Jeff (Joel McHale). I actually follow his career and I have liked all his stuff to date (who remembers The Soup?)

That was until Community. The main reason this show does nothing for me is because the comedy isn’t funny at all. Seriously, am I missing something? To me, the jokes are badly set up and the timing is worse. More than anything, it is just really irritating to watch this show! For me, it is also a little dead in terms of the tone. Again, what I am trying to say is watching this show with full attention is just not possible; you’d have better luck sticking it on in the background while you do your dishes. It just does nothing for me other than make the house a little less quiet.

Now, the only thing I will (or can!) say in its defence is that everybody does say the first season isn’t great and to watch the other seasons. However, I could not get past the first season and I didn’t like a single thing about this show, so I won’t be giving it a second shot with season two. My TV time is just far too valuable!

I also find the show’s cast is just a little too big. They should have kept the best characters and trimmed it down a bit. Maybe that could bring something funny into the show, as well as losing a lot of the boring moments from it. Maybe the timing and writing of the jokes could be written a bit better? I still wouldn’t watch it as it is too far into the series now. This may have come across as a bit of a rant, but this show was just such a let down, and I was initially really excited to see it.

Fans of The Big Bang Theory and pretty much any other comedy show will hate this!

Do you agree with me? Are you a fan of either of these shows? Or both? Let me know in the comments!
