Remembering Christopher Lee: His Best Characters

It’s difficult to choose the top five roles of anyone’s career, let alone that of a man who has been in the business for almost 70 years, but Sir Christopher Lee is especially difficult to praise because it doesn’t seem good enough for a man as multi-talented as he. Not only was he an inspiring heavy metal singer, he was a chameleon in the movie world as well.
He did it all; from the iconic Dracula in Horror of Dracula to suave Bond villain to intense, villainous Count Dooku from Star Wars. Yesterday we heard the heart-breaking news that Lee has passed aged 93; he left his mark across many film genres and amassed a huge fanbase during his phenomenal career.
In honour of the late, great man, we’ve put together his top five movie roles according to us.

Grigori Rasputin

Rasputin: The Mad Monk is a classic example of a mediocre movie that would’ve been utterly awful without the star power of the main character. Lee brought life to Rasputin, an evil peasant that gained a lot of influence with the Tsars in Russia and wrecked havoc in the lives of others.

Mycroft Holmes

Although we’re currently enjoying Mark Gatiss‘ turn as Sherlock’s older brother, Mycroft, in the modern adaption of the series, you really can’t beat old school class. Lee played an engaging Mycroft in The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes.

Saruman

As a nerdy community, perhaps we’re biased, but we loved Lee as the scheming Saruman in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The man had the perfect voice for any and all fantasy movies with that deep timbre of his (Side note: We’re beginning to notice a pattern: Lee was especially adept at playing villains).

Count Dracula

Few characters have been as recycled as Dracula. From the earliest adaption in 1922, Nosferatu, to today’s modern attempts, namely Twilight and True Blood, the character has seen a lot of screen time. However, that just makes the great performances stand out more. Lee first played a terrifying Count Dracula in the 1958 film Horror of Dracula, but took on the role an astonishing ten more times during his long career.

Mohammed Ali Jinnah

It may have only been a DVD-only film but, according to Lee, his turn as founding father of Pakistan, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, was his greatest performance of his career. Many fans may not have seen this obscure gem released in 1998 but, as it’s Lee‘s personal favourite, we feel it should get the number 1 spot here.
