Yes, like all other fans right now, I am whimpering softly to myself that this is not news of Kingdom Hearts III. Not all is lost! Square Enix have revealed that its plans to release this new free-to-play (with buyable content) smartphone game on Android and iOS systems is called Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ (the χ is pronounced ‘key’).
Taking us way back into the distant past of the Kingdom Hearts realm, players will become keyblade wielders and strengthen their keyblades by travelling to different Disney-themed worlds, collecting character medals. Thanks to this week’s Kadokawa’s Weekly Famitsu magazine, we know some of the confirmed worlds for the smartphone game are Wonderland, Agrabah, Dwarf Woodlands and the Olympus Coliseum, as well as a new original world, Daybreak Town.

Having originally released the Kingdom Hearts χ PC browser title back in 2013, which was only available in Japan and set in the time of the keyblades war, this game will share the same ‘worldview’.

Kingdom Hearts director Tetsuya Nomura also told Weekly Famitsu of their intention and vision for releasing this title overseas. He went on to say that Americans who had played the test version considered it to be a ‘card game’ and Nomura insists they want a different impression for the game, hence the use of medals in the battles instead of cards like in Chain of Memories. Nomura also mentioned that, due to the game having a voice chat function, they are considering separating the game servers by language.
It is said that the game will also tie into the long awaited Kingdom Hearts III. Stay tuned!
