We were so close. SO. CLOSE. Despite having started pre-production and having started assembling cast members, Tron 3 is no more as Disney have cancelled production. The Hollywood Reporter broke the story, explaining that director Joseph Kosinski and actors Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund were all primed for the film, with an offer to add Jared Leto to the cast and shooting to begin this autumn.
It is unknown exactly why Tron 3 was canned, but the most likely reason is because Tomorrowland opened to a weak response and Disney have decided to rejig their schedule, especially with regards to live-action blockbusters. It’s an unfortunate reality that Tron isn’t a strong franchise. The films have their fans, but as an enterprise it just doesn’t have the kind of weight a company like Disney would want out of its potential earners. We’ll be sure to update when we know more!
