Over the weekend at Star Wars Celebration, fans have been drip fed certain details about the upcoming releases in a galaxy far, far away.
One of the most gripping of these was at Gareth Edwards’ panel where a few lines of information surfaced about his foray into the Star Wars Universe next year.
Star Wars: Rogue One takes place in the interim of Episode III and Episode IV, leaning a little closer to Episode IV as the story will follow a group of rebels who come together to steal the plans for the Death Star. This will be the first Star Wars film not focused on the Jedi, but instead on a wholly human set of characters and premise.
Edwards said about the film that, “It comes down to a group of individuals who don’t have magical powers that have to somehow bring hope to the galaxy.” He also explained that the film will be far more grounded, aiming for realism and achieving a no-holds-barred war film, “It’s the reality of war. Good guys are bad. Bad guys are good. It’s complicated, layered; a very rich scenario in which to set a movie.”
Speaking on Felicity Jones’ character, the lead of the film Edwards stated, “Her character will not just be a stoic soldier, but a complex, fully rounded human.” Before adding that she is embodies the “complete package” needed for her character.
As far as teases go for a film, this is pretty enticing. Will there be talk of a certain Dark Lord of the Sith in film? Will any familiar Grand Moffs show their face? Could the current Star Wars Rebels animated show lead into it at all?
Whether any or none of these are true, I’m ecstatic over the idea of a bare-knuckle Star Wars war film.
Star Wars:Rogue One is set to shoot this summer and will be released in theaters December 2016
