Oni Press Open Submissions For New Content Creators
Are you an aspiring cartoonist? Is your writing a gift to humanity? Now is the time to show off and take a chance on yourself! Oni Press is opening submissions to the public as they’re looking for new stories and projects from talented content creators.
The post about submissions went live yesterday and has garnered a lot of attention since then. It also comes with a series of guidelines and tips from senior staff about what to do and, more importantly, what not to do. This advice comes from seasoned professionals who know what they’re looking for, so it will be a waste of time sending in stories that feature any of the following: superheroes (noir or otherwise), zombies, gritty detectives with a miserable past, rape or sexual abuse and vampires.
In terms of what topics they are looking for, diversity, originality and inclusiveness is mentioned a lot. Editor in Chief, James Lucas Jones, said, “You should be pitching us fully realized, considered pitches that continue the long Oni Press tradition of character-driven narratives that don’t fit in with other publishers’ conventions.”
Writers, never fear, as you don’t need to have an artist in mind to illustrate your work; if your pitch is really impressive, Oni Press will partner you up with a suitable artist. This is a great opportunity to get your work out there so, even if you’re a little low on confidence, you should apply.
There are different submission guidelines for each, including colourists, cartoonists, writers and artists, but the general rule is that you need to have at least 8 sample pages of work to show. All of your submissions should include your name, email address and contact number on every page. They also need to begin with a cover letter telling Oni Press who you are, who your project is for and how it fits at Oni Press.
The first submission period is open from May 1st to June 30th. Mark your calendars!
