At first it seemed that The Ring would be getting an Aliens-style sequel in the form of Rings, but Bloody Disgusting have confirmed that it is, in fact, a prequel.
The film, directed by F. Javier Gutierrez, will take place before the events of the 2002 Naomi Watts film, and will follow Samara and her life into the creation of the VHS that doomed its viewers.
Now, this would be an interesting prospect, if the staple plot of the two Ring remakes wasn’t finding out Samara’s backstory. Literally huge portions of The Ring and The Ring 2 are dedicated to showing what happened to Samara, who she is, and the horrors that led to her haunting the tape. That said, the script for this is apparently taking cues from the 1991 novel Ringu by Kuji Suzuki, so perhaps it will be worth the price of admission. Either way, it opens November 13, 2015.
