It’s officially March and for some reason it’s snowing… Irish spring never looked so rough! We know what to expect or rather we knew what to expect, spotty showers are the stuff we dream of now! I love rainy days, not that cold spitting rain that cuts into your bones, it’s the fresh spring rain that trickles down the window in your office, caught in sunshine (and if those goes on much longer I’ll sound like a Wordsworth poem).
I’ve had a pretty stressful days and to combat that day I’ve been listening to everything I can to chill out and stay calm – stress is the enemy, music is my weapon!
Here are some of the best tracks for the perfect miserable March!

Secret Garden – Nocturne

I was using Secret Garden music for roleplaying games I used to run back in my days as a full-time dungeon master. I’d no idea who they were let alone that they were Eurovision winners and that one half of the duo was Irish. Violinist Fionnuala Sherry and Norwegian composer pianist Rolf Løvland have together sold over 3 million albums and they won that Eurovision song contest too with this song!

Sia – Breathe Me (Extended Version)

I’m going to sound hipster and I don’t care I loved Sia before everyone else did – now I only heard about her after watching the Six Feet Under finale but regardless I loved her before everyone else. Her latest album ‘1000 Forms of Fear’ has taken the world by storm and while much of the discussion about her work as an artist is about her wish to remain out of the public spotlight, it has nevertheless received praise from critics and fans.

Pizzicato Five – Baby Love Child

Fell in love with this song after that episode of Futurama where we learn more about Leela’s childhood growing up as an orphan and her parents who left her so she’d live a life free from prejudice. Pizzicato Five are or were a japanese pop group that formed in the mid 80’s, they enjoyed a sixteen year career before breaking up in 2001.

Philip Glass – The Hours

Perfect movie for rainy days, ‘The Hours’ is one of my favourite books, movies and soundtracks – the perfect package. The film’s entire score was composed by Philip Glass and won the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Score.

Kate Bush – A Sea of Honey

Listen everything at this point has been gold but this is the real treat – Kate Bush. While the song sounds more like something fit for the summer, I’ve found myself listening to this and thinking of those warm orange evenings watching the sun dip below the horizon. It might be cold and wet outside but this song is the only distraction you’ll need to get through miserable March.

Leonard Nimoy – I Think it’s Gonna Rain Today

For the man himself, thank you sir for everything!
